Taxis

In this section, when you are asked to say something, speak loudly and clearly, and try hard to pronounce the words as the speaker does on the tape. After you have given your response, you will hear the correct version.
When
you get
into a taxi,
give your destination,
and add the word
"please." If you
want to go
to the Imperial Palace, you
say "(take me
to) the Imperial
Palace, please."
"Please" in Japanese
is o-negai shimasu. Listen
and repeat:

The

the driver pulls
up he will say
"where to?" doko
desu

Answer
the question
doko desu ka ? with
either the name
of the
destination alone
or the destination
with "please," o-negai
shimasu. For
example, if you
want to go
to the Imperial
Palace, Kyūjō,
when the
cabdriver asks doko
desu
ka? you say
Kyūjō or
Kyūjō o-negai
shimasu.
Now
you will
hear
the English names
for several destinations.
After hearing each,
give the destination
in Japanese, with
or without
"please," o-negai shimasu.

drivers may
just repeat the
name of the
destination, with or
without "huh?" e?
If you

"yes," hai
or
"no," īe. I f
your answer is "no,"
you then give
the correct destination
followed by the word
desu, "it’s".
For
example, you say
"the u, and
the driver asks
"huh? The Meiji Shrine?" ? Mēji Jingū?
Then you say
"no, it's the Imperial
Palace ," īe, Kyūjō
desu.
